What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy, or talk therapy, is a proven and effective therapeutic approach that applies clinical methods from established psychological principles in order to assist individuals in exploring and modifying their behaviors, cognitions, emotions, and interpersonal styles in order to live more satisfying lives. With an effective therapist, research shows that psychotherapy works better in the long-term and is more enduring than medication.

What is holistic psychotherapy?

At Aspen Holistic Therapy, we take traditional talk-therapy a step further by applying a holistic mind-body approach to your mental health and wellbeing. We believe that in order for real change and healing to occur, the mind, body, spirit and brain must all be incorporated into the therapeutic process.

We believe that all of us have experienced some form of hardship, from small wounds to bigger traumas, but that each of our stories is unique and that there is no one-size-fits-all treatment. The status-quo of mental health care, though well-intentioned, is missing some critical components and, although we do integrate traditional talk therapy into our work with clients, we believe that the mind cannot be healed with talk therapy alone.

Holistic Psychotherapy with Aspen Holistic Therapy might entail a combination of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), traditional talk therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, mindfulness based practices and nutrition and lifestyle coaching. No matter what modality we are using, at each session the client is met where they are at and needs are met in the moment with compassion and understanding.

Together, we can work on:

  • Responding to anxiety and depression in ways that help instead of hurt
  • Identifying triggers that put you into a state of fight-or-flight and contribute to self-defeating patterns
  • Exploring your relationship to your family of origin
  • Creating a sense of real and perceived safety
  • Growing positive attachment relationships
  • Working though internalized feelings of shame and confusion
  • Developing compassion for all parts of yourself
  • Creating your own personalized “tool kit” of resources to calm the nervous system
  • Practicing your version of self-care and boundaries
  • Understanding the root cause of your symptoms
  • Learning how to take a pause from the internal chatter to feel more grounded and present
  • Examining aspects of your lifestyle and diet that may be exacerbating symptoms
