What is Holistic Couples Therapy?

The Psychobiological Approach to Couples Therapy (PACT) is a therapeutic approach to working with couples and families that was created by Dr. Stan Tatkin, PsyD. The theoretical pillars of PACT are developmental neuroscience, arousal regulation and attachment theory.

PACT is a holistic model of couples therapy that was developed to treat the most challenging couples. PACT was designed to attend to the brain, body and mind in couples to assist them in building secure-functioning relationships based on principles, values and behaviors that are grounded in fairness, justice, and sensitivity that are good for both partners.

Can PACT couples therapy save my marriage?

PACT couples therapy will guide you and your partner to decide whether you value your marriage enough to save it, provide deeper understanding of the root cause of the challenges you face, and teach each partner skills to create a mutually satisfying relationship. In PACT therapy, couples explore how the attachment styles of each partner impact their thoughts, emotions and behavior in the relationship, how they can regulate one another in times of distress and how to be in each other’s care.

How is PACT different from other couples therapy?

  • PACT sessions are scheduled for 90 minutes, as they are in-depth
  • Often couples require fewer PACT sessions than with other couples therapy
  • PACT therapists pay close attention to facial expression and other physiological evidence of arousal
  • PACT sessions are sometimes videoed and watched with clients, so clients can see what the therapist is seeing
  • In addition to talking, experiential activities are utilized for in the moment learning
