Family Therapy in Aspen, Colorado

Families are complex systems consisting of generations of individuals coming together as one. When you consider all of the differing beliefs, strengths, challenges and life experiences that shape each family member’s thoughts, behaviors, and values, it is no wonder that at times families have difficulty functioning optimally.

At Aspen Holistic Therapy, we take a holistic approach to family therapy and believe that each part of the system is equally important to the functioning of the system as a whole. As such, we work with each family member together to deepen understanding, improve communication and provide a supportive space for working through challenges and building skills to become a truly unified team.

What is Family Therapy?

Family Therapy is a type of counseling designed to help families become more skillful at addressing family conflicts, managing stressors and working through challenging circumstances. In family therapy, the entire family participates in the sessions.

How does Family Counseling work?

No two families are alike; therefore, we work with each family using evidence-based modalities that best fit the presenting concerns. Rather than viewing one family member as the cause of the family’s problems, we view the entire system as playing a part in creating, maintaining and resolving the issues at hand.

Using family systems therapy, which focuses on intergenerational patterns in families and how they impact family functioning, and structural family therapy, which views symptoms in individuals as a manifestation of difficulty in the family, the aim of family therapy is to improve family functioning, communication and problem solving skills.

How can a Family Therapist help my family?

In family systems theory, the belief is that a change in one part of the system creates change in the entire system. A goal in family systems therapy is to explore patterns in the family that lead to stability and dysfunction. If you feel that there is frequent conflict, negative coping strategies, defensiveness and lack of effective communication in your family, family therapy might be good for you.
